A sector describes the organizational category of a person’s employing organization. On this page, all employed persons are categorized as working in one of the following sectors (bolded terms are used in the charts and maps on this page):

  • Private for-profit wage and salary workers:
    • Private: Employee of private company workers
    • Self-Employed: Self-employed in own incorporated business workers
  • Non-Profit: Private not-for-profit wage and salary workers
  • Local Government: Local government workers
  • State Government: State government workers
  • Federal Government: Federal government workers
  • Sole Proprietor: Self-employed in own not incorporated business workers
  • Unpaid Family: Unpaid family workers
